Labor Day has come and gone and there’s only two weeks left of summer. I can tell.
The sun, still bright and yellow, is no longer directly overhead at mid-day. Most of the perennials need a good pruning and many of the summer annuals are spent. The garden looks tired in general.

Sunflower update
June was an unusually cool month here in the San Diego area, so the sunflowers really seemed to stall out. Then the last week of June the clouds disappeared, the days heated up and bang! — The sunflowers took off.

Here in our neck of northern San Diego county we have a lot of flower growers. We’re lucky enough to live across the road from one who happens to farm for the cut flower trade, so we’re treated to acres of an ever-changing assortment of fragrant, multi-colored blooms rolling along the hills.
