So ends the summer of 2009
It’s been a little slow here at the ranch as of late. Late summer’s heat and dryness really don’t make for a good gardening atmosphere, so I’ve been laying low waiting for the seasons to change and the heat to go.

Labor Day has come and gone and there’s only two weeks left of summer. I can tell.
The sun, still bright and yellow, is no longer directly overhead at mid-day. Most of the perennials need a good pruning and many of the summer annuals are spent. The garden looks tired in general.

Sunflower update
June was an unusually cool month here in the San Diego area, so the sunflowers really seemed to stall out. Then the last week of June the clouds disappeared, the days heated up and bang! — The sunflowers took off.
